I think you're referring to Received Pronunciation, the BBC English. It's only spoken by 2-3% of the British population though. There are insane amounts of variety and dialects in Britain =)
Difference between you and me is that you're Maltese and there are like 300 people living on Malta. Chances of you having the same friends are a lot more likely.
