we dug a tunnel straight down to hell, was about a 30second fall in total :d

just kept digging down no matter what was in the way, even lava (we had to drain it elsewhere with TNT) and to survive it, either put water/cobwebs at the bottom to break your fall or use the item "Lucky Horseshoe" which negates fall damage
