I scan with mbam once every few months but it never finds anything, never had a problem so far, all I use my PC for is gaming and a few mainstream websites, everything else I'll use my laptop for.
Yes, in fact, everything I do use is safe. I don't buy applications/software and even more so, I don't download from untrusted 3rd party websites. As for cracks, which is very rarely the case, I stick to ACTUAL scene releases as opposed to grabbing random shit from torrents. I have absolutely no antivir, firewall (other than my linux box acting as router and cache server), or other form of anti-rootkit/malware software installed on my PC. In the extreme event that I do have to make use of the weird places on the internet, I have several VMs (mostly used in various development) to my disposable, sandbox'ing is also something I used to do few years back. And guess what, in 14 years of using windows I've never once been infected. Though, also helps that 80% of the time I am actually "browsing" or "working" online, I am using my *nix partition, but generally the idea is.. don't be an idiot and you'll be fine.
I do almost the same as you, but then again i am a IT Professional. I think i know what i am doing ( :D ).
But still, at Windows 8 i've been using ESET + MBAM.
The VM's idea is actually good and i've been meaning to do that for few years, but i always get lazy xD
jk

Not even a anti-malware?
It's like saying "i don't use any protection during sex. I take it out before...."..... :D
