Just to re-iterate: "Well. I guess it depends how old you're and when you started watching football. I would say from the early/mid '90s onwards." - "You could re-classify the modern era as when football became really commercial. And, the wages and transfer fees sky-rocketed."
Goalkeepers
Peter Schmeichel, while at Manchester United
Defenders
Paolo Maldini, while at AC Milan
Jaap Stam, while at Manchester United
Alessandro Nesta, while at AC Milan
Lilian Thuram, while at Juventus
Mid-fielders
Ryan Giggs, while at Manchester United
Zinedine Zidane, while at Juventus
Roy Keane, while at Manchester United
David Beckham, while at Manchester United
Forwards
Ruud Van Nistelrooy, while at Manchester United
Thierry Henry, while at Arsenal
Who you leave out is just as important as who you actually pick. I'm obviously a Manchester United fan, but there shouldn't be any real bias towards the team or any other Premiership players. I'll explain the choices which I assume people will dispute:
Roy Keane – Juventus 2-3 Manchester United 98/99 season. Enough said. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbRUc2c3nJM Only the goals, but the performance was something else entirely.
David Beckham – Despite the press attention and the fact most people say he's over-rated. He has finished a FIFA World Player of the Year runner-up twice (1999 and 2001). As well as a runner-up in the European player of the year in 1999. He has won the Champions League, Premiership and La Liga. He's the first British player to play more than 100 Champions League games and looks almost certain to be England's most capped player – sooner or later.
Ruud Van Nistelrooy – Well, it's either a case of love or hate. He's the second highest scorer in Champions League's history – by three goals but with 41 games to spare. He is a three-time Champions League top scorer, as well as a top scorer in three different European domestic leagues (Dutch, English and Spanish). You might not like his style, but his goal to game ratios is obscene compared to other top strikers. He holds and has broken every scoring record for every club and league he has played in.
A number of other players who I like include
Pavel Nedved,
Stefan Effenberg,
Gianluigi Buffon,
Paul Scholes,
Kaka,
Alan Shearer and
Fabio Cannavaro. I'm kinda influenced by the time when Italian football was the most dominant force in Europe. I'm not especially interested in the players who peak once then do nothing for a couple of seasons. A lot of big name players fall into this category. And, a lot of the new stars haven't had the same sort of success which the team above has had.
Who would you've?
Schmeichel
Maldini - Stam – Nesta – Thuram
Giggs - Zidane - Keane - Beckham
Van Nistelrooy - Henry

Who would you've?
and modern football team? :o
maybe add
and
edit : Perhaps rivaldo instead of keane, he was pretty amazing in those years as well though already over his peak
So you are saying that you would rather have that skinny brazilian street kid that the best midfielder in the world
lol@you
<_<
players like benzema and nasri will become awesome but atm they are just " really good "
I just put in some talents ^.^ You could also add Anderson, Nani etc.
Fabregas = cool caus he wants to play for barca again some day
Torres ok, i can live with him
also disagree with pretty much the entire midfield apart from zidane, and you really can't select someone based on one game ;D
Where are Buffon the best goalkeeper in the history and Cannavaro probably the best defender in the history? Neither one Brazilian? An an other thing Nesta was at his best when he was in Lazio not in Milan
C'mon
or just fails =/
+
Only agressive mid-fielders, you need someone like
Christiano Ronaldo instead of Giggs
agree on the rest
and nistelrooy? are you serious?
too many utd players in there
Seems good for me although I'm pretty sure there must be a better alternative for Van Nistelrooy. And
Edit: Other good strikers:
Five of them are still playing, and most of them won the Champions League after 2000. Only Schmeichel can be considered a '90s choice. And, that's merely because I think he's better than Buffon, Toldo or Kahn.
!
You could re-classify the modern era as when football became really commercial. And, the wages and transfer fees sky-rocketed.
defence: maldini, stam, terry, cannavaro
middfield: makalele zidane kaka figo
offence: drogba vannistelrooy (messi)
hf there :D
thats like steven segal and chuck norris ;)
my 90s team
Schmeichel
Maldini - Bruce – Adams – Thuram
Gascoigne - Zidane - Vieira - Beckham
Shearer - Ronaldo(or Bergkamp)
I'd say Thierry out, Cantona in... Henry is type of player that need milion passes to him, soe he maybe score a goal or two... Cantona was a god...
And as far as i know Maldini is cb, he cant play @ wing... Same as Thuram :P Bronckhorst and Roberto Carlos would fit perfect...
You could see it in last CL final when Malouda[if I remember good] was playing @ back... chealse lost goal because he isnt defender, but he can play as one :P
never^^
arshavin arshavin arshavin arshavin
arshavin arshavin arshavin arshavin
arshavin arshavin
Who is this player!?? :D

maldini
nesta
cannavaro
beckham
c.ronaldo
zidane
deschamps
nistelrooy
shevchenko
and if you talk about modern history, it means the time after the world war, so in football a good comparison would be after the inception of the premier league.
