you need to hack them when u want to install uncertificated *.sis/*.sisx files, what can be games or apps...
ofcourse u dont need to hack it when u install *.jar shit only (javafiles), but these are the most crappy games u can have on your mobile :D
so in a short sentence: not certificated apps/games can only be installed on a hacked phone!
99% of the games/apps u find on a warezpage for s60 phones is not certificated cause its cracked! when u buy them u can install them without hacking ofcourse...
oh and ye, you can sign the shit u wanna install, but it sux! so every normal s60user hacks his phone to install shit without signing...
btw, i was uploader @ AIVAnet and mod @ zone60symbian...had a 6600, N70 and N95. so u dont need to tell me stuff bout s60 phones ;)

worked for my e90 as well as for my 5800
or i hack the phone, can install anything too, but lose warranty...
imo option 1 is better.
