Firstly, I would like to thank all those that voted for me in the community awards. It makes it seem like these columns are worth while. To begin my first column of 2012, I took the opinions some highly respected players from our beloved gaming community.
Who is your idol?
Mine? His name was
RaZiel. He played for Rewind as well as team ID, and played at a top level. He was the finest piece of ass to ever walk the Wolfenstien world. God of both RTCW, and ET. Never before had someone aimed so incredible, nor have they since. On top of that, the kind sir wrote a manual to envoke and promote player improvement famously named 'Aiming by RaZiel'. Most of us will have read the 98MB wonder, I certainly have. For those that have not, in a nutshell it talks about gaming variations, both hardware and software, and different game styles to do with aiming. A must have for any PC gamer, if not any gamer. On top of that, he pretty much delievered the theory of increased polling rate to the whole gaming community, and looking at it now, I would say that this instead was his best achievement. That does not mean that it has not been done since though, and I may remind you how kind people like
abort and
Lightning have been to us, creating useful programs such as Rinput and Minimizor, and Ventimizor that some of us will use, and more of us should certainly test out. However, back to the original point, Raziel was the king, and no matter what you say nothing will change that. I never spoke to the guy, and doubt I ever will.
Nether the less, he was my first idol. My my! How I loved him. Some of us will have had
Mystic, others will have had
Ferus, I had the Norwegian aimer. His fragmovies were the start of such a fanboy hysteria. Think here of 'Center of Aggression', and 'Iratus'. Not only did I find the soundtrack simply amazing, but the constant spray of well placed and highly accurate bullets that spewed from his sub-machine gun or pistol into the unlucky opponent - who was sat red-faced raging in their bedroom on a slow connection; with a computer nearly exploding trying to deal with the FPS that the player was demanding - honestly mesmerized me.
According to other players, he was not the demon that his fragmovies made him out to be, and was instead the king of full spawn. I try to mimic that in my game style, I like to be the king of fullspawn.
Admittedly, things are different now. He was from the 2001/2004 era, and I'm sure most of you old-schoolers will recall him much better than I. The game has been both drastically improved and perfected now, and everyone can aim to a certain degree, and are not all raped by a player that sports what seems to be an outrageous low sensitivity that does not allow him to properly do 180 degrees over his mousepad easily.
The thing that I liked mainly about such a player, was his game theory. It is something that I have thought about quite a lot since, not in the actual sense of the game, but the other things. For instance, mice, keyboards, mousepads, and keyboards. I would even go as far as saying that it is down to such a charming man that I am typing this on an IBM Model M for you all to see right now.
It is strange thought that most players have someone that they look up to and see ways in which they are a player they want to be just like. I think that it is a hindrance too, as players try to play like their idols rather than working on their own play-style. The thing I love about the internet, is these players are accessible. You can find them lurking on IRC, and throw them a message, staring at your window hoping for a reply. People find it strange that I do not know, nor care for modern day actor's names; I tell them that I do not take notice because I see no reason to, they are not reachable. I could send them an email, perhaps if there was work involved, their agent would get back to me. The Internet celebrity was, and always will be, limited and stunted. The choice of the idol will be the thing that allows or disallows your communication with them, nothing more. There are different cases though, such as those highly famous players in South Korea that reach a true national celebrity status after destroying others in Starcraft. Think Jaedong, or Bisu. Perhaps in a few years all of this will change, and we will see gamers muscling their way through swarms of screaming teenage girls, but something tells me this is an absurd fantasy, and will remain that way.

Who was, or is your Idol?
inb4 busted within 2 months
e: HITSU :D
Back then i used to enjoy how mystic/ferus played at 2006/2007.
After that, came butchji and then mAus. mAus is still a reference for me, aiming wise he is sick.
Current idol would be
wat
Not that I care that much tho, thought you were serious in the 1st place :P
Those were and are my favourite players, so-called 'idols'. :)
For ET,
He keeps true to playing with "a sense of fun".
not because of his awesome aim, which i think was decent but not outstanding on high level but because he is the best strafer and is an awesome teamplayer.
- strafer: I remember watching demos of scelesto vs KiH of ownitschcup 2, and WTV cam specced him at start of allies. He managed to do the trickjump perfectly from north spawn and ended up being first in the flag in 13 seconds = Big WTV spam.
I watched those demos when i was starting to tj back in end of 2005. it's amazing how he found out about all these things so early like 2002-2003 together with wuff (not tj itself but the jumps on the normal maps).

seareal
:DDDDDDDDDDd reminds me of his replacement is none other than....
to the topic. I must say
ET:
Various games:
Ofc those were different times and they (unfortunately) can't be compared to nowadays standards.
And well...:
@ ScarZy: It's either
Unless he was referring to this super old insider joke
i kinda admire whole team, bunch of friends, pwning shit noobs in every possible game :-)
I once fakenicked gungy, does that count?
was some friend of my first clanleader
Red house on the back, some porch or stairs there, same pic, right?
I wouldn't say that there is a person, that I could call my guru or I spec him everytime. Ofc I like/liked to watch e.g. mAus, sqzz, wiesiek, tekoa or nuggan, who are one of the best players (also they play medics & I usually try to spec the best possible player on the server that play my class). But I can't say that I'm their fanboy, It'd be too big.
Also a big fan of
Don't need idols cause everything is different when I play with them so can't mimic an idol's gamestyle
why? its first ET god ever... dont recall anyone before him ending a map with 54-10 kill/death ratio... great aim combined with smart gameplay = win win win...
and imo 90% of et community fanboied Raziel, because of his movies and tutorial...
There was one player who was essentially the sole reason I ever started playing an amount of competitive et, and that was
Do you have by any chance some demos where he frags in? I used to have them but since a computer crash I don't have them anymore :(
The only two players I somewhat look up to nowadays and whom I really enjoy speccing:
but overall,i'd say it's
and looking at some ppl in certain teams it would be: gs(replicator!), stazi, old nl/kreaturen team,u96d,parodia(saintt was such a beast) & old dignitas team(hi intact!)...also kih guys + lotix and nowadays nuggan!
On second thought, was always in love with the old reload squad with mAx and gambit, watched mAx chapter 1 and the gambit movie like a million times or smth.
Also elemeNt from cs and Solisoft from ut2k4.
boom g5
As to my own playing style I don't think I have any influences from other players; most of the players I enjoyed speccing (I've only watched ETTV like 20 times, that says it all) play quite defensive, whereas I play (or played) really aggressive. I just do what I think will get my team the win fastest. It used to work quite well. :D
My idol however along with RaZiel has to be Urtier uber fops.
Sometimes he fought his very own battle on the server against certain players such as mystic, InterFace or Shewie just to beat them in 1on1. Our tactics were so focused on him sometimes that we were just failing because he didn't manage to get the breakthrough :-P
Did you always use the nick "Oxy"? No offence, but I can't remember you at all from that time :-O
and second was named here already as ramin i guess.

I think its much more impressive what QL duellers do than what ET players do. Its much harder to get to a top level in QL than it is in ET.
QL just requires more skill.
But thats completely unrelated to your column so I'll go for
u never played cpma did you? QL is so easy and newbish compared to it.

glad i could play with spear, civ and darkie et
:D unsure if troll, if not dear god.
I havent really ever idolised someone to the levels that some have said, I had huge respect for a list of players though -
My favourite player was probably
In ET, it is hard to say -

Hf :-)
dont think it was in this game darv did what I remembered, will find out though ;)
Darv was my idol back in RTCW and the best player I ever played along side. Such a nice guy too.
Redfive
Jizz
Vash
Hammeh
Penn
We're all still together :)
for my panzertimes (@ u|k* pub + (HBC)) it was
picked up the rifle a few times because of
lingually, it has to be
Not idols, but players i like to watch
but butchji, night & sqzz are nice players to spec
I idoled one4one
And Polar/Evolve
Idle.ee
Parodia
acozz/Ati for me
retards so you can forget about any of your quotes on this site??
I never had an "idol", but I think snoop was the one who impressed me the most with his playing style in ET, Rollstone is almost on the same level, followed by ramin..
But the player that I consider as the best and really look up to is
reload & sqzz also belong to that category, loved speccing them because of their movement and medic skills
But Nights definitely the most valuable player in my opinion
No eng smg I looked up to, but chry is pownage nowadays =)
All
And the outstanding players on the very first publics I played in:
Also some of the players who should have deserved to be on the top from the beginning or didn't ever get the credit they deserved. Such as crew & torspo.
If my wits have not abandoned me, certain DSky player looked a bit like that popstar and that was mentioned several times on the #et-finland channel. Need extra tips?
E: For the burglar I thought you were going for mustanaamiot, doubt it though because of the pub-thingie.
Overall i'd go for
Maybe Cyper might be the better player, but Rapha somehow just facinates me when i watch him play
Lately I just watch the guys I've played with in the past 2 years to follow the improvements.
They are great players :)
mAus sickest aimer ever
sqZz best team player
EDiT: Or Baggiez happened to like both of them :D
I will say that out of the typical players mentioned, M1lk is someone who i really admired not just for his skill, but he is an awesome guy aswell. Has to go down for me as 1 of the best players i ever played with. He was always so calm on comms had an incredible aim and always knew what he had to do in a situation. In his prime, i would build a team with and around him. Also, the time i spent with him at Lans he is an amazing guy, someone who i have a lot of time and respect for. Absolute laugh at times.
Also, its amazing to see a player like sqzz who i used to watch being a regular player of trickjump, doing amazing revives and flagcaps to a player who is the perfect medic nowadays. His aim is so underrated to the point where i voted him as best aimer, his gamesense and medic skills cant be matched. Also, an absolute cracking guy who i would consider as a close friend.
From the few games i got to play with mystic, i was surprised at how friendly and comical he is. Would play matches with the most laid back attitude, fragging people for fun, yet still laughing on comms which to most who specced him would realise he hardly/never talked in game on a server. His positioning, gamesense and aim, like mAus, was amazing and i think they both get categorised as amazing aimers yet there is a lot of things like positioning and gamesense that make them such fragging machines.
The other players that i used to "fanboy" that i have eventually ended up playing with are Night, razz, XyLoS, perfo, Toxic, mAus. I could write essays on what makes them so good aswell, but would take up too much time. The main player that i never had the chance to play with who is also amazing is reload and probably butchji and ferus (amazing guy too) - being a typical aim loving fanboy when i first started playing.
There are obviously players before my time mentioned that i never had the chance to really spectate.
I think in summary it shows how unique ET is as a game and how individual players can shine for different reasons.
Best medic, best team player, always playing obj and he is the player i've seen more hs on a match... he just seems so hard to kill on 1on1 fight
Being NA,
almost forgot
If I were to choose somebody as my idol in gaming, it'd be djWHEAT. The guy has been everywhere, done everything and has millions of tshirts from his stories. A walking, talking, living esports legend.
anyway, mAx chapters 1-3 are one of the best movies i've ever seen :D just like a True Destination;)
Ingame leaders like
So true, though Anubis did a great job too. Think raveneye was the first, aggressive, +forward and jump while shooting rifle :)
quake:
/period
perfo clown mztik (of those i played with regularly) were the guys i tried to learn from most i guess, but all of the snb/uk players in general had a lot to teach
I used to be a big fan of
*profile may vary
e: totally forgot about
and ofc
These guys are/were pure awesomeness, both with incredible gamesense.
And maybe RaZiel, judging by his movies and demos..but i have never seen him play. :|
i wasn't even into non-public owning in the 3on3 prime (2005/2006?) where many of the current highskilled EC/6on6 players derived from. i just had a polish friend called
+ when that first
(i could literally write a column of my 3on3 inspiration and motivation but it's too much, sorry :D)
Since, Mztik was the played I had learned the most from, even though I was fortunate enough to play and be close to all of them.
Xpaz was sooo clever too. Best eng smg, and smartest player I've played with.
Jauhis, jafo were awesome too.
Milk.... greatness
Xylos was by far the best rifle I ever played with.
XyLoS
Xpaz
Mztik
sqzz
These 4 were sick, and I was very lucky to know and play with all of them :)
PS. night and reload aren't too bad either :P
____________
Edit: All this nostalgia makes me want to fix my laptop and play again :(
Mztik is probably the best player I ever played with too, generally stable. Heard great thing about Crozz's reboots and wooden PC from Overboost ;D
E: syK was also one of the best players i've played with when it came to positioning

what a cancercolumn
Before I played competition, I used to fanboy Boozze (BZZ) the guys who made Yawn. The RTCW airstrike jumps, switching to luger instead of reloading and a lot of small things I noticed when watching their movie got me to think about how to play better. Eventually ended up on sweRTCW and discovered aiming by raziel, so he became my overlord.
In the beginning of ET I used to fanboy krea and reload (the team with shewie, ganon, max, shaq, etc) back in the good old Clanbase benelux 6vs6, when I was still playing for w@co and mazz. Sockeh made Welcome to ET, we used to chat a lot and I ended up watching lots of mystic demos.
Later on tekoanoob pointed out that Night was by far the best player in idle and after speccing some of his games I became uberfanboy.Toxic i alsway respected for all the little tricks I picked up from him. I think the only player that came close to night and toxis in playstyle had to be Saintti, I loved speccing that guy.
Sheep is the player that defined my gameplay the most, he totally reinvented the eng SMG class with the aggresive mines and using his teammates to be able to spam freely. Too bad Sheep came back when ET was 5vs5 cause, he had good aim but his gameplay wasnt built around it. Also Clown deserves an honourary mention by introducing the landmine faggotry on Radar at the truck. And weak, who had to play at lan to find out everyone in ET played with smoke off (cg_wolfparticles). And ofcourse, mAus at cpc2 where he really dominated. He is still good, but back then he was just up there with nobody coming close to his damageoutput.
and the best is
Quake:
He wasnt even that good, but i just liked watching the guy play.
+
Also
et:
Now i look up to kanzaki or mustee !
In et:
I never saw RaZiel play but bcuz of "Aiming by RaZiel" I started messing with my cfg and started to see the benefit of not having a default cfg :D
Always loved to spec
And for rifle ownage,
EDIT: THIS COLUMN HAS GOT COMMENTS FROM SUCH OLDSCHOOL PLAYERS THAT I HAVE THOUGHT HAVE LEFT THE BUILDING AGES AGO, why u wont play anymore?
i love everyone i ever played with, anyway :)
Also liked sic, who like some people before me mentioned was pretty underrated and probably even a better aimer than the guys I mentioned before.
but most of all i was and still speccing sqzz
few yrs ago when i was watching winghaven's fragmovies....i was thinking what if i can do something like him , and i started playing panzer every time i had the chance
same with sqzz, when i saw his insane docrun on frostbite and flagcaps on bremen and supply...from that time on i'm always trying to get the first spawn flagcap on bremen on almost every war. and ofc i want to be the docrunner :DDD
mAus,nuggan and reload ... was watching for their aiming
kot...started to spec him since he did that original on delivery and that panzer on radar
butchji...he was doing the main action almost every time.
On et im mine idol.but enjoy watching karnaj.
he was my first idol <3 ownage sniping @ publics
best.
Out of curiosity what was it you found interesting with my gameplay?
Riflers:
Was also a huge fanboy of
well the best aimers in rtcw was e77a and
also liked
back in the old days i used to look up to ferus raziel mystic and sic, after the era has changed i specced razz and kris alot..
best players ive ever played with or ive seen around are
and not to forget:
just said that the most guys of the community nowdays dont know anything bout rtcw, i bet nobody still knows e77a.. raziel wasnt even nearly the best aimer out there, ankel was a way better than him, everybodys just watchin his movies and after u saw those u think "wow what an amazing player, hes the best ive seen" tho thats quite wrong..
My column was rather sarcastic, i suggest you re-read it in a sarcastic tone.
The best player I've ever played with would have been Mztik. Others include aza, clown, perfo, abort and meez probably.
everybody else is shit
Edit :
after him I found fette & smutzig some way.
after that period Ankel & xpaz were my idols.
then I had Night & Lunatic
& lately I love watching sqzz
But I would be lying if I said I didn't read the raZiel guid 2-3x :D
Team dignitas and their movie was my favorite I watch this every day and before I should play a game I remember :p
related url: http://clanbase.ggl.com/warinfo.php?wid=4091635
when i started playing it was all about Redcross + almost every Player from Dsky and gunslingers those were like gods back then.
afterwards it was always mystic that shined over all but my personal hero was always raveneye
greets anubis
From that period the people that impressed me the most are:
Best team players I ever had:
Best clans ever:
Started to spec drc and mztik because i played with them at efterlyst and fd-nl, they obviously owned big time.
Just because he's awesome at so many games, quite jelly of that :)
Clown
Xylos
